On the Back Burner

I am so super stoked to participate in my first ever Beat the Backlist challenge! Hosted by Novel Knight, the challenge consists of reading as many – or as few – backlist books you’d like in 2018. The only catch is – hence the word backlist – that all books read to count toward the challenge must have been published prior to 2018.

Beat the Backlist is a great fit for me – I already have SO many backlist books on my shelves. This will be the perfect excuse to focus on my older books in addition to mixing in some new ones to which I’m looking forward. Another awesome thing about this challenge is that it will totally coincide with other challenges I am already planning to or will possibly take part in, as backlist books are on my agenda for the other challenges I signed up for as well.

So, here are the beyond simple…

  • The challenge amazingly runs from January 1, 2018 until December 31, 2018!
  • Books read MUST have been published prior to 2018
  • Use the #BeatTheBacklist hashtag!

I am seriously loving that there are Beat the Backlist teams! There will be four groups showing down in the hopes of winning awesome prizes at the end of the year. I was sorted into Team Book Bards – shout out to my fellow teammates!

What Shall I Read?

So, I’m planning to try some other year-long challenges this coming year and I’ve already made a reading list for one, which does consist of quite a few backlist titles already. Therefore, I’m going to read those books plus 20 additional backlist books! That sounds like SO. MANY. BOOKS! But, most of what I read is on the backlist anyhow!

My Tentative List

  1. It by Stephen King
  2. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe
  3. Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children by Angus Oblong
  4. Beloved by Toni Morrison
  5. The Godfather by Mario Puzo
  6. Smile by Raina Telgemeier
  7. The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
  8. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
  9. Exquisite Corpse by Penelope Bagieu
  10. The Distance Between Us by Kasie West
  11. The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
  12. Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
  13. Lumberjanes #2 by Noelle Stevenson
  14. Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life by Rachel Renee Russell
  15. Homicide in Hardcover by Kate Carlisle
  16. The Glass Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
  17. On Thin Icing by Ellie Alexander
  18. Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich
  19. The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule
  20. The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord

That’s all folks! Good luck to everyone competing in the Beat the Backlist challenge!

Love, Maggie

Now that is an excellent TBR! So many amazing books are on it and some I haven’t read but want to get to as well! Great choices! Good luck!

Yes! I’m all about Stephen King, although I’ve been reading The Stand, my first King novel, since June! LOL! I adore his writing and imagination. While IT the movie is a tad goofy (I’ve only seen the original), I still loved it and am so excited to delve so much more into the IT saga!

I think I’ll “UNOFFICIALLY” be PARTICIPATING in this challenge. I am really hoping to read so many of the books I already own and catch up/finish series I’ve already started. From your list, I’ve only read The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (haven’t read the rest of the series, though). Happy reading!

LOL! Yes, totally get those older books blown through! I’ve got SO many backlist books that I’ve collected over the past 1000 years that are begging to be read! LOL! I’m so bad to buy books and wait forever to read them – then I feel bad for neglecting them! 😀

    • Maggie

Yay, Sarah! I hope you are able to join in – maybe you’ll be sorted onto my team! One thing that’s so awesome about this challenge is that really all you have to do to sign up is announce your intent to join – I did so with a tweet and then wrote up my post! If you join and remember, holler at me and we can keep up with each other’s progress!
